Billy is a 17-year-old web student studying at his local Vo-Tech. He has been studying for one year with some previous experience from his past schools and self-study.
It has been a while since he updated his portfolio, and with the ever changing technologies and standards, would like to see what other students are doing. He is trying to get a feel for what would be best for him.
After viewing several digital portfolios, he decides that the best approach would be a simple, straight-forward interface and basic layout. Gimmicks should be used sparingly. He has also determined that excess content and "original" (as in "don't remake the wheel") navigation should be avoided.
Ryan is a web designer with 15 years of experience under his belt. He is currently looking for someone to work during the summer.
The main things he is looking for, in terms of information, are: information about the creator; a portfolio with explanations of why and how various projects were created; the creator's current employment status; the resume. If these are not readily present, he simply moves one because he doesn't have the time to spend hunting for the information he needs.
Betsy is a typical user of the internet: she uses it for email, checking news and blogs, playing games, and the occasional recommended site. Her main interests when surfing are learning about new technologies and being engaged in what she is reading. She has also been using the StumbleUpon toolbar to enhance her browsing experience.
Like a lot of casual users, if a page takes too long to load, she will skip it and go to the next one. A site has to have something obviously interesting to her before she will stop and take a look. She also prefers to have blogs delivered to her reader rather than constantly visiting a site to see if there are updates.
