Back40Design
Week 2
My second week with Back40Design consisted of me actually using the Javelin CMS.
Using Javelin isn't hard, really. It's straight-forward, although the preview while editing content isn't always entirely accurate. The hardest part I had in learning how to use Javelin, wasn't the software, it was trusting my own intuition and ideas of how the content should be laid out and pictures should be displayed. If you've looked at my site, you'll see I have a (in some people's minds) obvious lack of pictures. I'm not a picture person, but clients trying to sell products don't have that luxury.
This week, I get to complain! I really hate Office 2007+. Thanks to UBitMenu, which will be featured Monday, I can deal with it, but a big problem is the copying and pasting aspect. Word, if you were unaware, uses a unique XML frame work for formatting, and when you copy text from Word to something that is used to reading straight text, it can get a little weird with the formatting. Thankfully, Javelin has a "Past from Word" button that strips the text of the icky XML, but I would rather just not deal with Microsoft.
Yay! Another complaint! PDFs are wonderful things, unless they are saved in such a format that when you copy and paste, you get an "unknown" square. I just want to give my mother a quick shout-out: Thank you for teaching me how to type, and always making me use the home row. Who knew it would be so useful to me? Thank you.
